Functional Medicine in Rochester, NY

A Physician-Led Approach to Understanding the Whole Medical Story

When symptoms do not fit neatly into one diagnosis—or when years of laboratory tests, medications and specialist visits have never been brought together into one coherent picture—it may be time for a different kind of medical evaluation.

Laurence E. Torpey, MD, a board-certified Family Physician with more than 25 years of clinical experience, provides extended physician consultations designed to organize complex medical histories, identify contributing factors and develop an individualized plan for better health and function.

When You Know Something Isn't Adding Up

You may already have diagnoses. You may already have specialists. You may have had dozens of laboratory tests.

But you may still be asking:

“How does all of this fit together?”

Fatigue & Low Energy
You are tired despite sleeping—or your stamina is not what it used to be.

Weight & Metabolic Changes
Weight gain, insulin resistance, body-composition changes or difficulty losing weight despite substantial effort.

Digestive Concerns
Bloating, altered bowel habits, food-related symptoms or persistent gastrointestinal concerns.

Pain & Reduced Function
Pain, stiffness, weakness or reduced mobility that may involve several contributing factors.

Inflammatory or Multisystem Symptoms
Symptoms involving several organ systems without one clear explanation.

A Fragmented Medical Story
Multiple physicians, tests and treatments—but no one has assembled the complete timeline.

Functional medicine does not assume that every symptom has one hidden cause. It gives us a structured way to examine the relationships between your medical history, current diagnoses, medications, metabolism, nutrition, sleep, activity, environment and other relevant factors.

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is a patient-centered, systems-based approach to healthcare that evaluates how a person's medical history, physiology, lifestyle, nutrition, sleep, medications, environment and other factors may interact over time.

At Transformational Medicine and Spa, functional medicine builds upon conventional medical diagnosis rather than replacing it.

We begin with the same fundamental responsibilities of good medicine: history, examination when appropriate, differential diagnosis, review of prior testing, recognition of established disease and referral when specialist care is needed. Functional medicine adds additional tools for organizing a complicated medical story and prioritizing potentially modifiable contributors.

Functional medicine should not replace good medicine.

It should make good medicine more comprehensive.

Looking Beyond the Symptoms

A tree is a useful analogy—but not because every symptom grows from one root.

What appears above the surface can be influenced by multiple factors below it.

Sleep deprivation, previous medication or antibiotic exposure, nutrition, metabolic health, chronic stress, environmental exposures, digestive function and underlying medical conditions may interact differently in every patient.

Our job is not to assume which “root” is responsible. Our job is to determine which factors are medically relevant to you.

What Happens During a Functional Medicine Evaluation?

1. We Hear the Whole Story

Your symptoms, diagnoses, operations, medications, treatments, major health events and relevant lifestyle history are organized chronologically rather than considered one visit at a time. .

2. We Review What Has Already Been Done

Whenever possible, relevant laboratory results, imaging and specialist evaluations are reviewed so unnecessary duplication can be avoided.

3. We Build a Medical Differential

Functional medicine does not replace diagnostic reasoning. We consider recognized medical conditions first and identify questions that may still require evaluation.

4. We Look for Connections

Metabolic health, nutrition, sleep, activity, medication effects, stress, gastrointestinal function and other relevant factors are considered in the context of your individual medical situation.

5. We Create Priorities

You should not leave with 25 new interventions. We identify what matters most, what should happen first and how we will determine whether the plan is helping.

One Medical Evaluation. Multiple Paths Forward.

Why Patients Choose Dr. Torpey

What Functional Medicine Means at Transformational Medicine

We DO

We DON'T

We DON'T

✓ Start with conventional medical reasoning
✓ Review existing records whenever useful
✓ Develop a differential diagnosis
✓ Use laboratory testing selectively
✓ Consider medications and supplements together
✓ Address nutrition, sleep, activity and metabolic health
✓ Coordinate with specialists when appropriate
✓ Track whether treatment actually works

We DON'T

We DON'T

We DON'T

✕ Assume every symptom has one mysterious root cause
✕ Order every available specialty laboratory panel
✕ Tell patients conventional medicine has failed them
✕ Assume “natural” means safe
✕ Require large supplement purchases
✕ Promise cures
✕ Replace emergency or specialist medical care

Who May Benefit From a Functional Medicine Consultation?

A consultation may be particularly useful for people who:

  • Have persistent fatigue or reduced energy.
  • Are struggling with metabolic health or weight.
  • Have gastrointestinal symptoms that remain incompletely understood.
  • Have symptoms involving several different systems.
  • Have accumulated extensive records from multiple specialists.
  • Want a physician to review how medications, nutrition, sleep, activity and metabolic factors may interact.
  • Want a structured plan rather than another isolated treatment.
  • Want to improve long-term health before more serious disease develops.

Not Emergency Medical Services

Functional medicine is not appropriate for medical emergencies. New or rapidly worsening symptoms, chest pain, severe shortness of breath, neurologic deficits or other potentially urgent conditions require appropriate emergency or acute medical evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. At Transformational Medicine, functional medicine builds on conventional medical evaluation. Established medical diagnoses, medications, diagnostic testing and specialist care remain important when clinically appropriate.

Our developing functional-medicine model is designed primarily for extended consultative care. Patients should maintain appropriate primary-care access for routine preventive services, acute illness and comprehensive ongoing medical care.

Not necessarily. Testing is selected based on your history, examination, prior evaluation and the clinical questions that remain unanswered.

No. Supplements may occasionally be recommended when there is an appropriate rationale, but they are not the foundation of every treatment plan.

It can provide a broader framework for understanding obesity and metabolic health by considering body composition, glucose regulation, sleep, nutrition, activity, medications and other clinically relevant contributors. When appropriate, patients may transition into Transformational Metabolic Medicine.
